Yesterday — dust storm + 90 km/hr. winds + hail + BEATING DOWN RAIN.  I got soaked outside as I was caught in the middle.

Tons of trees uprooted, signboards destroyed, glass shattered.

Google App Engine Chooses Django April 10, 2008

Google is one company that truly gives Python first class citizen status and use it extensively throughout their organization, so it was no surprise that their application hosting platform (AppEngine) uses Python throughout. I was extremely pleased to find out that they chose Django as a core part of their application platform. I’m a big fan of Django and look forward to getting my account created there to try out some apps.

Irresponsible Reporting April 10, 2008

I stumbled upon this article titled Five reasons why Vista beats Mac OSX  over at ComputerWorld, a magazine normally known for quality reporting.  This article really is shockingly irresponsible, is written without any form of research, and if wasn’t for the date — I would have dismissed it as an April Fool’s Day prank.

Unfortunately it isn’t, and the 109 people that commented on it seemed to agree.

This is just unreal. Velchip a broadband powerline (BPL) company in Malaysia is working on a project to provide… “60 million users unlimited high speed Internet connection of 224Mbps (megabits per second) at a cost of only around RM5 (US$1.58) per user per month.”

It is part of an ambitious project to link together 400,000 mosques in the ‘Smart Mosque’ project across 3 years.  More details at compuworld malaysia.

Digsby - Go. Get. It. April 6, 2008

If you have accounts on more than one IM service — you fall into two categories. Either you run three or four different IM programs, or you suffer with one of those programs that tries to connect to all of them at once.  If you fall into the second camp, then you owe it to your IM-buddies to get yourself Digsby.

Not only does it connect with everything under the sun, it also hooks into Facebook (who doesn’t have a Facebook account) and various other social networks. You can also set it up to check all your email boxes. My personal favorite feature is that the default theme is smooth operator, one of my all time favorites from Adium.

Nokia Intellisync April 3, 2008

I’m sure everyone has heard of Blackberry aka “Crackberry”, the device and the company (Research In Motion - RIM) that created an army of lawyers and execs thumbing away emails, notes, and other text on the tiny devices.

The Blackberry service is more than instant email; its also about security and device management. IT managers can remote wipe devices, help customers remotely, and even provision devices over the air (OTA).

Nokia’s answer to corporate email push is the intellisync platform, which like Blackberry provides device management, instant email, and a few other perks.  Almost everyone has experienced the Blackberry phenomenon.  I, however, wanted to see what the other side was like so I have now been using Nokia Intellisync and would like to share my experiences with you.

MySQL based Authentication System April 1, 2008

I spend most of my (limited) free time online helping people with their PHP/MySQL woes. One of the most common problems crop up when people try to create a simple authentication system linking PHP with a user database. To help people with this issue (and to avoid having to repeat the same thing over and over again) I’m writing this very simple tutorial to guide the less-experienced. (more…)
